St. Mary’s B.N.S. Celebrate 50 Years

St. Mary’s B.N.S. was founded on the 1st of July 1973, even though a stone hadn’t been laid for the school building. A site for the new school building on the Grange Rd was kindly gifted to the parish by the Loreto Sisters for the education of boys from Rathfarnham. Before the building was opened the boys were educated in prefabs in the Loreto Primary School and in the old schoolhouse now the Parish Centre on the Willbrook Road.

On January 8th, 1977, the Rathfarnham boys assembled at the old schoolhouse and under the guidance of Principal Mr. Jim Molloy and teachers marched proudly to their newly built school St. Mary’s on the Grange Rd.

As part of our commemorations marking 50 years that walk will be reenacted on Wednesday June 9th at 11:30am when pupils from 2nd – 6th will be joined by pupils who were at the original walk. On Thursday June 20th past pupils from the seventies will visit classes to recount their past memories. At seven o’clock there will be an evening for former pupils and parents to visit. There will be memorabilia from the past on display, roll books, photos, newsletters, etc. The Rathfarnham Concert Band will entertain all assembled and the famous Croke Park hurling final of June 21st, 1978, when St. Mary’s -V- St. Mary’s with Mr. Walsh as referee will be reenacted. It promises to be a night full of memories.

On Friday 21st there will be a special school Tionól(Assembly) beginning with a school Thanksgiving Service, followed by a special reeling in the years video and ending with songs from the decades from the classes. The day will end with a party for all our pupils on the grounds.

The celebrations will conclude on Saturday June 22nd, with a midsummer’s Barbecue in Ballyboden St. Enda’s clubhouse. This will be a ticket event. We hope you can join us to party and dance the night away as we celebrate 50 bliain ag fás.
