Student Council

Why?

St. Mary’s Student Council was set up in 2008 arising from the school’s audit of our Code of Behaviour.

Who?

It is co-ordinated by Niamh Hughes. In-class elections take place and one boy from each fourth and fifth class and two from each sixth class are nominated.

How?

Using a suggestion box, the class rep/s brings their classes suggestions to a meeting of the council. The suggestions are discussed and using a ‘dotmocracy’ system, the council come up with a list of requests ranging from what they view as most important to least. The requests are brought to staff and Parents’ Association meetings.

Achievements

Over the years the Student Council have been successful in affecting change e.g. a redesign of the school tracksuit, new more comfortable seats for pupils, extra bicycle rails, abolition of lining up after break time, book donation days, permission to wear the school tracksuit on Cumann na mBunscol match days, new goalposts and nets and most recently a new school mascot.

Fun

The Student Council have also helped to organise fun events for the boys such as soccer blitzes, ‘St. Mary’s Got Talent,’ and all-sports blitzes.
