Our Season Review
Back in November Mr. O' Neill organised an after- School Hurling League for boys in 5th and 6th class. On the final day the teams played in hail and snow for a whole hour. It was a great success and got the Junior and Senior teams started. After playing 3 friendlies against St. Joseph's Terenure, Hollypark and Ballyroan the squad of 21 was quickly cut down to 15 before our first league match against Knocklyon. Andy Keenan was the captain. It was a crushing victory by 10-6 to 1-2.
In our next match we played St. Brigid's Castleknock in Tom Russell Park. Seán Flynn was our captain. We did not play well but we won 5-6 to 2-4.
Our next match was against Johnstown in Deerpark. James O'Connor captained us to a super victory, 8-0 to 1-2.
Robert Farrington captained us in a really tight match against Scoil Lorcáin, Kilmacud. Andrew Boyd Lyons was oustanding between the posts. Conor Kennedy's arm was broken in this match and it ruled him out for the rest of the season. Aidan Mellett and Garrett Crowley scored the goals in a 2-5 to 0-9 victory. We left the Hermitage confident of reaching the final.
In our next match, against Bishop Galvin, Andrew Boyd Lyons captained us to an easy win. The score was 12-6 to no score.
Then it was the decisive week. We had two matches against Marino and Scoil Fhiacra to decide our season, both in Tom Russell Park.
On Tuesday, we played Marino. Garrett captained us. Unfortunately we played badly and lost 6-3 to 3-2. Our title hopes had taken a huge blow.
On Wednesday we had to beat Scoil Fhiacra to stay in the competition. A couple of fine saves from Andrew Boyd Lyons and two marvellous goals from Rory Murray kept us in the competition. It was a really tight game. We could have got another goal but no one was there to finish Garrett's cross. The spot in the final was decided on a toss of a coin. On Thursday 15th of May, Mr. O'Neill called us into the hall and told us we were in the final. There were lots of celebrations.
Now our team is training hard every break for the final. The school, staff and players are looking forward to a great final. Let's hope the Cup is coming home!
